St. Lucia is the sort of island that travelers to the Caribbean dream about–a small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown.
St. Lucia, one of the Windward Islands of the West Indies’ Lesser Antilles, is nestled halfway down the eastern Caribbean archipelago and is known for its majestic mountains, lush rain forest and secluded waterfalls.
St. Lucia seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soaring 2,000 feet up from the sea, is where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish.
Walk this way
These majestic mountains were formed from lava and rock and are now covered in green vegetation. Hiking is only recommended on Gros Piton, which offers a steep but safe trail to the top. Tourists are permitted to hike Petit Piton but should be aware the second half of the hike requires rock climbing and safety equipment is not provided.
There are a variety of trails leading hikers through the rainforest, old plantation grounds, along beaches and landmark attractions.
Barre De L’isle Trail: This moderately strenuous two-hour trail divides the eastern and western halves of St. Lucia.
Forestiere Tropical Forest Trail: This tour goes into the heart of the St. Lucian countryside to the rural community of Forestiere and through the dense forest adjacent to the town.
Eastern Nature Trail: This trail is a 3½-mile trek along the Atlantic coastline on the east side of the island. After the hike, drive to Latille and indulge in a twenty-foot waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation.
Tropical Islands Rainforest
Deep in St Lucia’s mountainous, tropical islands interior almost 1,800 feet above sea level, lies 19,000 acres of rainforest and the 29 miles of trails that run through it. Experience one of the guided tours of the rainforest and treat yourself to an experience you will treasure forever. From bubbling waterfalls to sightings of the rare and unbelievably gorgeous St. Lucian parrot, the Jacquot, you will surely have some once-in-a-lifetime stories to tell when you get home!
St Lucia volcano the only drive-in volcano in the world
The St Lucia volcano is located in Soufriere. The people of Soufriere pride themselves on having the only drive in volcano in the world right at their door steps. In fact, there are people living within the perimeter of the craters.
Other Activities
There is a broad array of exciting and exotic activities available on St. Lucia. The island’s steep coastlines and lovely reefs offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. The rainforest preserves of St. Lucia’s mountainous interior are one of the Caribbean’s finest locales for hiking and bird watching. Of course, the island also possesses excellent facilities for golf, tennis, sailing, and a host of other leisure pursuits.
